Susie King Taylor escapes slavery at 14. Charlotte Forten, a teacher from Philadelphia, boards a steamship, as does Laura Towne, a Boston medical school graduate. All three end up in Beaufort and the Sea Islands in 1862. Learn about the power of education and the resourcefulness of these women.

Event Details

Opened in 1850, Magnolia Cemetery is one of the oldest public cemeteries in South Carolina. Dr. Kyle Sinisi will discuss the significance of the Civil War on the historic burial site.

Kyle S. Sinisi, Ph.D. is a Professor of History at The Citadel. He teaches courses concentrating on the Civil War, World War II, U.S. military history, and the history of weaponry. He is a two-time recipient of the James A. Grimsley Award, The Citadel’s annual award for excellence in undergraduate teaching.
