Event Details

In celebration of the newest exhibition, Soul of the South, learn more about Gullah spirituals from Dr. Eric Crawford. This edition of Virtually Speaking will highlight the mission of the Charles W. Joyner Institute of Gullah Geechee and African Diaspora Studies. It will also focus on the Gullah traditions and culture which influenced the songs composed by the Gullah people, in particular some of the singers living on St. Helena Island. Join us on Facebook at 5:00pm for the live watch party.

Crawford holds a Ph.D. in musicology from The Catholic University of America. His research focuses on the rich tradition of Gullah music, specifically the retentions and alterations that have occurred since the antebellum period. Beginning in 2007, he conducted extensive field recordings on St. Helena Island, site of the historic Port Royal Experiment, and his transcriptions are held at the Folklife Center at the Library of Congress.
