Liberty and Its Limits: Free People of Color, the Enslaved, and the American Revolution in South Carolina

In this presentation, Dr. Dangerfield will explore the experiences of free people of color and enslaved South Carolinians during the American Revolution and the important contributions they made during the fight for American independence. The program will examine the difficult choices African Americans faced during the conflict, the opportunities offered by the British, their roles alongside American Patriots, and the ways they pursued freedom during the Revolution and its immediate aftermath.

Dr. Dangerfield is an Associate Professor of History at the University of South Carolina Salkehatchie and a scholar of South Carolina history. His research focuses on free people of color and their complex social and legal status in South Carolina from the American Revolution through the Civil War.
